Barbara Houston

With nearly 39 years of unwavering support, compassion, and community spirit at the Ayrshire Hospice, Barbara has been with us since before the hospice even existed.

Her journey began through her church, where she joined a small committee of 14 passionate individuals, many from New Cumnock. They met at another supporter’s house, fundraising tirelessly through ceilidhs, fun days at the racecourse and nearly new sales. In many ways, these were the very first Ayrshire Hospice charity shops!

“I felt there were people that needed help,” Barbara shares. “My mum had cancer, and so have I, so I understand and I have empathy.”

Barbara’s commitment continues to this day. Every Wednesday, she’s is in the Cumnock shop sorting clothes, chatting with customers, pricing items, donating to the tombola and helping the team however she can. Her energy and humour light up the room, just like the time fellow volunteer Mary danced around in an all-in-one lycra outfit!  Barbara often has a chuckle at this. 😂

Barbara also knits baby clothes with friends to sell through the flower shop, and she’s learned new crafts over the years, including making and selling “nappy cakes” at the Factory Outlet. When asked if she ever lowered the price, she laughed and said: “Did I? Flippin heck!”

You never know when you’ll be touched by the hospice,” Barbara says. “It’s so important we support it, it touches everyone.”
