Day services

Day services

Day services is a welcoming, informal and relaxing space; almost like a home from home.  It is a vibrant, social place for patients to come and visit for the day, whilst still living at home.

We can provide care for sixteen patients daily, equating to over 800 patients every year.

Our nursing team undertake a holistic nursing assessment to identify the individual needs of each patient and/or their family. This includes:

  • Management of physical symptoms
  • Emotional & spiritual support
  • Anticipatory care planning
  • Support for family/carer

Input from the multi-professional team at Solas will be assessed and reviewed on a regular basis, determining the duration and level of intervention required.

We provide patients and their families with respite and access to a wide range of day services Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm (excluding public holidays) including:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Hairdressing
  • Complementary therapy
  • Symptom management advice
  • Social work

Through day services we also offer the following:

  • Arts and crafts classes
  • Complementary therapy
  • Men’s group
  • Art class
  • Meditation and mindfulness
  • Creative writing class
  • Hand care
  • Woodwork
  • Gardening
  • Reminisence group
  • Young people’s group
  • Out ‘n’ about group

Our aim is to encourage patients to attend day services when they are well enough to do and for our Specialist Palliative Community Nursing team to visit them at home when they are not.  Patients are encouraged to use their own transport to get to Solas day services.  We do have a team of volunteer drivers who are available to transport patients, however this is a limited service.

We also have a Drop in Café open to the public on a Wednesday from 10am-4pm.  Where patients and families can access advice and information or even just have some coffee and cake. For more information on the drop in café please click here.

Access to day services is by referral to Solas from a GP or other healthcare professional.  Following referral, our nursing team will assess the individual needs of each patient and their family, and how we can best help them.
