University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and Ayrshire Hospice have signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement, which will see both organisations build on their already close links.

This Partnership Agreement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations in August 2013, which marked the formation of Scotland’s first ever University Hospice.

UWS and the Hospice are key organisations in the field of health and social care in Ayrshire.

This new agreement will see the University and Hospice further strengthen their relationship and focus resources on those high priority areas that are common to both organisations’ strategic plans. Both organisations have ambitious and far-reaching strategic development plans aimed at the provision of research and skills development to support the innovative and effective delivery of care within the integrated health and social care landscape in Ayrshire and Arran.

The Agreement, which was signed by Mandy Yule, Chief Executive of the Ayrshire Hospice and Professor Paul Martin, Depute Principal of University of the West of Scotland, reinforces a continued commitment by both organisations to combine joint specialist knowledge and research skills to help improve the lives of people with life-limiting illness, their families, partners and carers across Ayrshire & Arran.

This Partnership will see UWS and the Hospice jointly enter into partnerships with related health and social care organisations and undertake therapeutic projects in areas supported by the University.

In addition, this new development will lead to the creation of a formal workforce development plan to support Hospice staff maintain and extend skills and expertise in the integrated health and social care environment.

Professor Paul Martin, Depute Principal of University of the West of Scotland, said: “The University has close ties with a number of charities and third sector organisations throughout Scotland and we are delighted to build on our already close links with Ayrshire Hospice.

“This new Partnership Agreement will lead to the further development of joint research and practice that will benefit palliative care patients and their families here in Ayrshire and beyond.”

Mandy Yule, Chief Executive of the Ayrshire Hospice, said: “We are delighted that our strong relationship with UWS has resulted in this strategic partnership agreement. Our research programme will increasingly develop and benefit from the specialist statistical, methodological and research design expertise offered by our colleagues at UWS and together we will work to build and enhance the reputation of UK hospice research.  I am convinced the agreement will lead to continuous improvement in the study and provision of palliative and end of life care, with the needs of our patients and their families remaining at the heart of all that we do.”
