Starlight Walk

Starlight Walk

Posted on 20 July 2016 by Monika Reichelt

Over 700 walkers took to the streets of Ayr on Saturday 21st May 2016 for our annual Land o’ Burns Starlight Walk. This year saw the best weather conditions yet - perfect for an ‘evening stroll’.  With fantastic entertainment from top Ayrshire Band ‘Vice Versa’ along with WEST FM’S very own Michael Smith, walkers were warmed up with the team from Curves, Ayr, ready to go for the big walk start at 10pm. Along the route we had musical entertainment, flashing fairies and courageous characters on stilts. Everyone was treated to a mars bar, water and banana at the halfway point in Alloway (or Castlehill Church for our 4 mile walkers!) - courtesy of supporting sponsor Cooperative Food.  Furthermore The Cook School Scotland were on hand at the hospice grounds giving out cups of hot soup to passing walkers! Mmmmm!  Delicious!

This year the walk took a new neon style twist with flashing headbands, wigs, and Mohawks galore.  Everyone certainly made the effort transforming the route into an array of flashing colour! Meanwhile, our Mouse Hunt was another great success with some fabulous prizes being won by our lucky winners.  Huge thanks to all who took part and of course to our very kind prize donors.

At this stage we are still receiving walker’s sponsorship from the walk but we are anticipating to have raised over £70,000 from this venture. If you walked the Starlight Walk and have any outstanding sponsorship monies, please get this to us as soon as possible so that we can announce the final amount raised!

We would like to thank all our walkers for their fantastic efforts.  We also give great appreciation and thanks to our wonderful volunteers and stewards for kindly giving up their time to cover the various roles on the night.  Sincere thanks goes to our supporting sponsors Cooperative Food, McKissock Electrical, South Ayrshire Council, Ayrshire Post, Barrs Soft Drinks, Air Image, WEST FM, Cook School Scotland and Healthy Working Lives.

The Starlight Walk is now in its eighth year and it still remains a popular event on our annual calendar and a formidable fundraiser for the hospice. We hope you can look out for your flash wear and neon tutu for next year’s walk on 20th May 2017.  Date for your diary!  Thanks again everyone for being our stars at this year’s walk!
