Over 600 walkers took to the streets of Ayr on Saturday 19th May 2018 for the 10th annual Ayrshire Hospice Land o’ Burns Starlight Walk.  The weather proved to be excellent providing a pleasant evening for to event.

Once again pre-walk entertainment was provided by the talented MC man DJ Colin McArdle, with Alida Biagi getting participants warmed up before sending them off in style at 10pm from Ayr Racecourse, accompanied by the tunes of the Maybole Pipeband and encouragement from Mary the Faerie and her stilt-walking friends.

Volunteer stewards were once again on hand to marshal the 13, 9 or 4 mile routes offering encouragement to walkers along the way.  Whizzing into help was the fantastic team from Ayrshire Blue Knights motorcycle group. Domino’s Ayr provided volunteers and walkers with some tasty post walk pizza before heading out to steward the route too!  Other tasty treats were generously provided by Bookers and Country Fresh Meats.

Some fantastic live music from local band “Goodfellows” kept walkers entertained at the Alloway rest stop, kindly lit by John McKissock and his team from McKissock Electrical, where participants were given complimentary snacks, courtesy of Tesco Stores throughout Ayrshire with their very own Community Champions on hand who also volunteered on the night.  A very welcome soup stop was also catered for by The Cook School Scotland in the hospice grounds at Racecourse Road, with walkers being offered a complimentary cup of warming vegetable soup.  On triumphant completion of their walk everyone received a special 10 year commemorative medal at the finish line and a well-deserved bacon roll.

Graeme Strawhorn, Senior Fundraising Officer said “Saturday night was another very special night for the hospice.  It’s always a fantastic moment when all our walkers come together for this unique event, supporting the hospice in their own special way.  Whether it is in support of a relative, friend or colleague who suffers from life limiting illness or in celebration/in memory of a loved one, events like the Starlight Walk always show us how amazing our community support is.  When we look around the Ayrshire Suite at the Racecourse each year, we are reminded of how many people are touched by our cause and we are, as always, deeply grateful for their support and their fantastic fundraising efforts.

A huge thank you also goes to all our employed and voluntary staff for filling the various roles throughout the evening.  We simply could not stage this event without them! Thank you so much for helping us out!

We are also, of course, extremely grateful to our main sponsor Ayr Audi for their generous support and for providing Audi vehicles on the evening to support the walk as it progressed throughout the streets of Ayr and Alloway.  We would also like to say big thank you to all of our supporting sponsors: Tesco Ayr, Healthy Working Lives, The Cook School Scotland, South Ayrshire Council, McKissock Electrical and the Ayrshire Post. We greatly appreciate all of your support”.
