Spotlight on...Reception volunteers

Posted on 26 September 2018 by Monika Reichelt

“It’s an immense privilege to be part of the hospice family.” That’s the view of Anne Swan, a receptionist at Racecourse Road.

And Anne is part of a hospice family in her own right! Three generations of her family have volunteered for the hospice over the years, an impressive record of loyalty and service.

Anne and her mother became involved in the very early days:

“In the autumn of 1988 my late mother and I started as volunteers at the Ayrshire Hospice. Both of us were placed on the ward, serving meals and refreshments to patients and visitors. At that time the hospice had the grand total of 2 patients and over the years we witnessed the hospice grow to the 20 bedded unit we have now. My two daughters began volunteering as school girls and continued their involvement during university holidays.  At one time three generations of the same family were all on duty, often working with each other.”

Before her retirement, Anne’s mum took on the role of a Meals Volunteer which she enjoyed enormously. Anne’s daughters still talk of their days at the hospice and she is sure that volunteering in such a place gave them a different perspective on life.

Versatile Anne has tackled many roles before finally working on Reception, a job which she likes very much. “One never knows who is on the other end of the phone or will walk through the door. It is very enjoyable, sometimes challenging, but always rewarding.”

Anne concludes, “I really don’t know where the last thirty years have gone, but 30 years on, I’d do it all over again!”
