Sportsman's Dinner

Sportsman's Dinner 2017

Posted on 6 December 2017 by Monika Reichelt

This year’s annual Ayrshire Hospice Sportsman’s Dinner on Friday 27th October 2017 took place at a new venue, The Carlton Hotel, Prestwick and was an outstanding success raising over £21,500 for the hospice!

A sell-out event, guests at the dinner were entertained by a popular panel of speakers: Robbie Duncan (Chair), Former Welsh footballer and Celtic superstar John Hartson and radio, TV pundit and comedian Andy Cameron MBE.  The hospice were also privileged to welcome Dutch footballers from the 1970’s and 80’s Rene and Willy van de Kerkoff as VIP guests. Rene was famously nutmegged by Scotland superstar Archie Gemmill, in one of the most memorable goals in history with Scotland playing against the Netherlands in a Group D fixture at the 1978 World Cup. Rene and Willy received a glorious welcome at the dinner with a special Scottish presentation gift presented by Fiona Menzies and Graeme Strawhorn from the hospice.

The hospice are thrilled by the ongoing support of the Sportsman’s Dinner and give special thanks to generous event sponsors Arthur J. Gallagher, supporting sponsors Kerr & Smith and Urquhart Opticians as well as all the donors to the fabulous auction, silent auction and raffle.  Additional thanks to the fantastic speakers, table hosts and their guests who all helped raise over £21,500 for the hospice; a truly amazing amount!

Colin Miller, Branch Director of Arthur J. Gallagher in Ayr commented “We’re immensely proud to have supported the Ayrshire Hospice Sportsman’s Dinner for the 11th consecutive year. As a community broker, we are keen to champion the hospice and the exceptional care that it provides for local people. We are delighted that the money raised during the event will make a significant contribution to its efforts.”

Graeme Strawhorn, Senior Fundraising Officer added “We have been truly overwhelmed at this year’s Sportsman’s Dinner, not only with a sell out attendance but with the amazing generosity of our guests.  We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and are exceptionally pleased with the final result. We look forward to welcoming everyone again next year”.

The hospice already have speakers pencilled in for 2018 including former referee John Rowbotham, top comedian Eric Davidson and Scottish football journalist and radio presenter Tam Cowan as compere. Watch this space for further details!
