In loving memory of Betty, my mother's dearest friend and mother to my own dearest friend. My parents and I had such wonderful holidays in Largs with you and Peter, Louise and Sarah. Your understanding and tolerance of teenage girls was amazing and I could talk to you about anything without ever feeling that you judged or disapproved. Even in my 60s you told me that you still thought of us ‘girls’ as ‘the children’. In my case at least you were probably right!
