The physiotherapists work within the Hospice and Day Hospice. They provide advice and assistance to optimise the patient's level of physical function and improve quality of life.
A full assessment is carried out and treatments are provided according to individual patient's needs.
Interventions may include:
- Advice on personal exercise programmes to improve strength and stamina
- Relief of pain e.g. TENS, ultrasound, massage, splinting / collars
- Techniques to reduce breathlessness and clear chest secretions
- Provision and education in the use of walking aids
- Assessment and referral for wheelchair in conjunction with the occupational therapist
- Management of lymphoedema (swollen limbs)
- Support and education for family/carers
- Liaison with hospital and community physiotherapists to ensure continuity of care if patients are to be treated out with the Hospice
